After a 9th placed finish in our first season back in La Liga, we’re naturally optimistic about the future and looking to see how we can build on that and hopefully secure European football next season.

I like to first look at how the team performed to see where we can make immediate improvements, and then at each player to see who we need to stick with and who can be moved on.

Girona FC – S2,4: Did the Data Hub save our season?

In the last update we’d used the Data Hub to figure out why we were still failing to create ample goalscoring opportunities. Using our findings we make tweaks to (hopefully) allow us to:

  • Win the ball more often, as well as slightly higher up the pitch,
  • Hold on to possession more to let us progress the ball better through the phases
  • Create better chances and score more goals.

To achieve our season goal of beating Pablo Machin’s 10th placed La Liga finish we’d need these changes to work as we entered a “month of doom” as we faced Barcelona, Sevilla, Valencia and Atletico Madrid, before finishing off with an easier game against Elche.

Girona FC – S2,3: Troubleshooting with the data hub

Off the back of the last post we know that although things are slowly getting better, we still have a some problems which we need to fix asap if we want to achieve the first aim of this Girona save: beating Machin’s 10th place finish in their first season in La Liga after promotion.

Simply put, we needs to create more chances and we need to score more goals.

I would image, however, as with most things football, it won’t be as cut and dry as that…so let’s dive into the data hub and see where the issues lie.

Girona FC – S2,2: Post-patch blues

FM22 Analytics, tactics and soccernomics

When we left off we’d just been beaten 5-0 by Atletico Madrid and were reaching for the Ibuprofen to ease some tactical-based headaches.

After looking at the stats from the three variations we’d tried, the decision was made to stick with the 3-4-1-2 and try to develop this further.

Was the new formation a roaring success? Did we add a new 20 goal-a-season striker in the January transfer window?

After seeing the fixture list we were confident we could make a decent start to our La Liga campaign. Could our free-scoring striker partnership keep on firing, or would age catch up with Stuani and would La Liga be a step too far for Manchester City loanee, Bustos?
