When we left off we’d just been beaten 5-0 by Atletico Madrid and were reaching for the Ibuprofen to ease some tactical-based headaches.

After looking at the stats from the three variations we’d tried, the decision was made to stick with the 3-4-1-2 and try to develop this further.

Was the new formation a roaring success? Did we add a new 20 goal-a-season striker in the January transfer window?

Girona FC – S1,1: The season so far, and a pressing matter.

August to November: the season so far.

As you can see, we’ve had a very impressive start to the season, picking up 10 wins, 2 draws and being yet to taste defeat. On the way we’ve scored 27 goals and allowed only 7, with only Tenerife conceding less.

A tactical preview

As mentioned in the previous post I’m going to try to emulate ex-Girona manager Pablo Machin’s success by pinning his “badge of identity” firmly to my lapel by using a 3-man defence. Normally, I’m a disciple of my trusted 4-2-3-1 and my few attempts with a 3-at-the-back system haven’t been a success, but hopefully through some grit and determination this time will be a roaring success and catapult us into La Liga at the first attempt.

Setting the scene:

Since their formation in 1930, Catalonia-based Girona FC have only spent TWO seasons (2017 & 2018) in La Liga. 

Currently playing in La Liga 2, out of the 11,200 capacity Montilivi stadium, the Gironistes are part owned by the City Football Group (which includes Manchester City) with another 44.3% of the club owned by Pep Guardiola’s brother, Pere.
